Looking for things to do with babies and toddlers in North County San Diego? From stroller-friendly parks and beaches to indoor play spaces, gardens, and animal experiences, North County has plenty of activities for little ones. I've rounded up 18 baby- and toddler-friendly things to do throughout North County San Diego, including options for different ages, budgets, and stroller situations.

North County covers the cities north of San Diego proper, anywhere from a 30- to 50-minute drive to downtown. As a mom raising a 2.5-year-old in North County, I don't always want to make a drive down to San Diego whenever I need something to do with my toddler. Fortunately, North County is just as family-friendly as San Diego, and often calmer and less crowded.

If you're also spending time in San Diego proper, here's a full 3-Day San Diego Itinerary Guide to cover the rest of the trip.

Why You Should Trust This Guide

I've lived in San Diego County for four years and I'm in the thick of the toddler phase myself. I'm constantly hunting for activities that keep my daughter engaged and active. San Diego County is one of the best places in the country to raise a family, and I've tested nearly everything below in person.

Parks and Playgrounds

  1. San Diego Safari Park

15500 San Pasqual Valley Rd, Escondido, CA 92027

Overlooking the Safari Park exhibit

The Safari Park is a sister property to the San Diego Zoo, built around large habitats you can ride or walk through. While the San Diego Zoo may seem like there are more activities, the Safari Park have popular tram tours that take you into the animals habitat and they recently opened up a new restaurant in the heart of Elephant Valley called Mkutano House where you can dine with an amazing view of the elephants. Escondido is warmer than the coast, so dress for the heat. My favorite spot is the Kangaroo Walk where western gray kangaroos and wallabies roam freely alongside visitors. The park overall feels far less congested than the Zoo, which makes it easier to keep an eye on a toddler.

  • Best age: All ages

  • Stroller rating: Excellent

  • Tickets: Free for babies under 2. Check current pricing and dates.

💡 Elaine's Tip:

  • If you'll visit the Safari Park or Zoo more than once a year, the annual pass usually pays for itself by the third visit and includes parking.

  • Make advanced reservations for the Mkutano House as this is the park's newest restaurant and experience.

  1. Kit Carson Park

3333 Bear Valley Pkwy, Escondido, CA 92025

A large, shaded community park with plenty of picnic tables and open fields for toddlers to run. I highly recommend checking out Queen Califia's Magical Circle sculpture garden, which is open only at specific times: Tuesdays and Thursdays, or on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month. Every Monday evening at 6 pm, there's a women's running meetup at Kit Carson Park organized by Nobody Cares Run Club. I've seen mom's come with their jogging strollers, although the run/walk includes some trail sections.

💡 Elaine's Tip: Bring bug repellent for Kit Carson Park for the afternoon/evenings because there tends to be lots of mosquitos when its hot.

  • Best age: All ages

  • Stroller rating: Good on the paved lake paths; grass and dirt in some areas

  • Tickets: Free

  1. Jack's Pond Nature Center and Park

986 La Moree Rd, San Marcos, CA 92078

Jack's Pond Nature Center is a red barn in San Marcos, ca.
Jack's Pond Nature Center

A hidden gem that pairs a pond and easy nature trails with a historic barn full of hands-on exhibits, plus two playgrounds split by age group. The Nature Center itself is open to the public on Sundays only, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., making it a great stop for locals or anyone passing through San Marcos that day. Don't forget to thank the volunteers for keeping the nature center running!

  • Best age: 2+ months and up

  • Stroller rating: Not great on the dirt paths closest to the water; paved sections and playgrounds are stroller-friendly

  • Tickets: Free

Best Outdoor Activities

  1. LEGOLAND California and SEA LIFE Aquarium

1 Legoland Dr, Carlsbad, CA 92008

Couple standing at the LEGOLAND entrance with Halloween decor
LEGOLAND in October for Halloween

LEGOLAND is built around the preschool-to-early-elementary crowd, with gentle rides sized for little ones and a Duplo-themed play village. If your toddler needs a lower-stimulation break from rides, the SEA LIFE Aquarium would be a good add-on as it's connected to LEGOLAND.

  • Best age: Ages 2 and up

  • Stroller rating: Great

  • Tickets: Ages under 3 don't need a ticket for LEGOLAND (Water Park ticket is separate if you add it on); kids-go-free promotions with a paid adult ticket run often, so check current offers before booking.

  1. Batiquitos Lagoon Nature Reserve

7380 Gabbiano Ln, Carlsbad, CA 92011

A flat, well-maintained gravel trail alongside the lagoon offers an easy, shaded walk for toddlers to spot birds and wildlife, with benches along the way for feeding or diaper-change breaks.

  • Best age: Toddlers and up

  • Stroller rating: Good

  • Tickets: Free

  1. Carlsbad Flower Fields

5704 Paseo Del Norte, Carlsbad, CA 92008

baby touching flowers at the Carlsbad Flower Fields in Carlsbad, CA.

From March through May, you can check out fifty acres of blooming ranunculus flowers. There's a tractor wagon ride that makes it super easy to get around with a stroller. Plus, there's a butterfly encounter and a little maze that are pretty popular extras for an additional fee. When my daughter was about a year old, she was totally fascinated by the flowers when I took her there.

  • Best age: All ages, best experienced in spring during bloom season

  • Stroller rating: Good on the main paths, but the fields are dirt paths. Carrier recommended if you don't want your stroller to get dirty

  • Tickets: Kids under 2 or 3 are typically free; paid admission applies for older kids and adults, and the butterfly encounter and wagon ride are usually separate add-ons. Advanced reservations recommended.

  1. San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve and Nature Center

2710 Manchester Avenue, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, CA 92007

Hit up the nature center before walking the trails for the hands-on educational exhibits, a drawing area for kids, and greeting the rangers on duty. San Elijo is the largest marshland in San Diego County, and the walking trails are great for birdwatching with a baby or toddler. Soft-surface and paved sections both run along the lagoon. This is a great activity to get your young ones out in nature.

  • Best age: 12 months and up

  • Stroller rating: Good

  • Tickets: Free

  1. Foxpoint Farms

1200 Fox Point Farm Lane, Encinitas, CA

This is a cute Encinitas community built around regenerative agriculture, where you can buy fresh produce, drinks, and snacks at the Harvest Market or neo-Neopolitan pizza at Foxpoint Pizza. Kids can do a live animal feeding for a small fee, and there's a large lawn area for picnics, so bring a blanket and let your toddler hangout. They often host events throughout the week and have live music too.

For the adults: Grab tacos or burritos onsite and a beer from Foxpoint Farms Brewing. They also have a dine-in restaurant upstairs on the 2nd floor called Haven Farm + Table where then bring seasonal ingredients directly from the Fox Point Farms field onto the menu. Since the ingredients is seasonal, the menu changes with the seasons.

Parking: The parking lot is very small, so unless you plan to get there by 9:30 am, your best alternative is to park along Paseo De Las Flores for street parking which is two blocks from the venue.

  • Best age: All ages

  • Stroller rating: Great

  • Tickets: Free, except a fee to visit the farm animals or hosted events

  1. Sugar Sweet Farm

Encinitas, CA (by appointment only)

A locally and privately owned farm that hosts two-hour curated experiences for small groups, including animal encounters, photo opportunities, and hands-on learning with goats, llamas, miniature donkeys, miniature horses, rabbits, and chickens.

  • Best age: 2+

  • Stroller rating: Limited on farm terrain; a carrier works better than a stroller

  • Tickets: Free under the age of 2. $60 per person for ages 2+

Best Indoor Activities

  1. Children's Museum of Discovery (Escondido)

320 N Broadway, Escondido, CA 92025

A smaller-scale discovery museum curated to spark curiosity and imagination so this definitely keeps the kid busy. They have a dedicated section for babies under 2 years old to crawl around too! My daughter's favorite activity is the water station and the garden whre she can water the plants. After our first visit, we decided to move forward with an annual membership and this is something we do at least once a month.

  • Best age: 2+12 months to 8 years old

  • Stroller rating: Good, the parking lot is small and they have an overfill parking lot that's a couple block away.

  • Tickets: Free for babies under 12 months. Check admission rates on their website.

  1. Kids & Coffee

2310 Camino Vida Roble Ste 101, Carlsbad, CA 92011

A shoeless indoor playground for the kids and café for the parents, with padded play structures, a quiet room for sensory overload, and coffee for you while your toddler burns off energy. I love that the setup is clean and welcoming as soon as you walk in.

💡 Elaine's Tip: Make sure to bring grippy socks for your kids because it is required to play. Otherwise, you would buy it at the venue.

  • Best age: Toddler and up

  • Stroller rating: Great in the lobby/café area; strollers are left at the door for the shoeless play space

  • Tickets: Around $30 for two hours for one adult and one child, with a smaller add-on fee per extra adult; confirm current pricing directly

  1. The Lullabar

7750 El Camino Real Ste 5145-5150, Carlsbad, CA 92009

Mom and baby with The Lullabar backdrop for Mother's Day in Carlsbad, ca.
Mother's Day event at The Lullabar

Part café, part nail salon, with onsite childcare, the rare spot where you can get a manicure or answer emails while your toddler plays nearby. A nice reset if you need an hour of "me time" mid-trip.

💡 Elaine's Tip: Try their strawberry cream matcha latte from the cafe.

  • Best age: Toddler and up

  • Stroller rating: Great; strollers can be parked at the entrance

  • Tickets: Check current rates and reserve childcare slots in advance, since they can fill up

  1. Mom Amore Kids Club

4259 Oceanside Blvd Ste 108, 111, Oceanside, CA 92056

A cute indoor shoeless playground in Oceanside with a large ball pit, slides, a busy-board wall, and climbing areas suitable for toddlers and young kids. Private birthday parties are available for an additional fee.

💡Elaine's Tip: Bring grippy socks for your kids, since socks are required on-site, so packing your own saves you from buying a pair there.

  • Best age: 12 months and up

  • Stroller rating: Great

  • Tickets: Check website for current rates

Beaches and Waterfront Activities

  1. Moonlight State Beach

400 Encinitas Blvd, Encinitas, CA 92024

Sunset with clouds at Moonlight State Beach.
Sunset at Moonlight State Beach

Clean restrooms, a playground right at the sand, and a paved parking-to-beach path make this a favorite North County stop for families, though the walk down from the lot is on a hill.

💡 Elaine's Tip: There is a pickup/drop-off area at the beach entrance. It's convenient to drop off beach supplies there with one person while the driver finds street parking, so you can avoid carrying everything from the car.

  • Best age: All ages

  • Stroller rating: Good, aside from the hill between the lot and the sand

  • Parking: Free limited street parking available. Early arrival suggested.

  1. Del Mar Beach

Powerhouse Park, 1658 Coast Blvd, Del Mar, CA 92014

Father and toddler on swings at the Powerhouse Park overlooking the Del Mar Beach.

Parents love Del Mar Beach because restaurants and shops right by the beach. You can do a beach day in Del Mar and walk over to Powerhouse Playground where it overlooks the ocean (the best playground view in North County, in my opinion). Grab lunch along the beachfront at Poseidon's, or walk a few blocks to brunch at Monarch's and award-winning gelato at An's Hatmaker inside the Del Mar Plaza.

  • Best age: All ages

  • Stroller rating: Fair. Fine around the neighborhood until you go on the beach.

  • Parking: Free street parking available, but can be limited on busy days.

Free Things To Do

  1. Visit the Local San Diego County Library

Every week, San Diego County libraries host free story times and activities grouped by age. During the summer time, they have summer reading programs that parents and kids can participate in for free prizes once their reading milestones are achieved. They're usually on weekdays and are one of the easiest, lowest-effort outings with a baby.

  1. Lowe's and Home Depot Kids Workshops

Lowe's and Home Depot host free hands-on building workshops, typically held monthly on a Saturday. Reserve online in advance since they fill up. The workshops are best for toddlers 2 and up who can handle simple hammering and assembly with help, but I started talking my daughter as young as 18 months to get her immersed in the environment and watch. Technically, I'm the one building at this stage, but it's a fun activity to do together.

Note: You will need to sign up as an awards member to register for the workshops.

Baby and Toddler Day-Trip Packing List

A few things I never leave the house without for a North County day trip with a baby or toddler:

  • Sun protection: wide-brim hat and baby-safe sunscreen for all outdoor activities

  • Shade on the go: a packable beach/pop-up shade tent for the beaches

  • A carrier: for farm stops and sand where strollers struggle

  • Grippy socks: packed ahead for indoor playgrounds

  • A lightweight travel stroller: for stroller-friendly paved paths at LEGOLAND, the Safari Park, and the lagoons

Staying Overnight in North County

Encinitas city sign

If you're doing a longer trip in North City, Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Del Mar all have family-friendly hotels. My personal favorite city to stay at would be in Encinitas as it's a central beach town in North County and they have many restaurants within walking distance to the beach.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best age-friendly attraction for babies in North County?

For babies under 2, the calmest, lowest-stimulation stops are San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center and Kit Carson Park. Both have flat, paved paths, plenty of shade, and quiet space for a feeding or nap break. For a bigger outing, the San Diego Safari Park works well for babies who nap in the car, since the drive-through sections don't require much walking.

Is the San Diego Safari Park worth it with a toddler?

Yes, though it works best for toddlers 18 months and older who are awake and curious rather than napping through the visit. The bus tour and Skyfari tram make it manageable without excessive walking.

Is LEGOLAND worth it for babies?

LEGOLAND is better suited to toddlers age 2 and up than true babies. Most rides have minimum height or age requirements babies won't meet. That said, kids under 3 get in free, and the Duplo play village, splash pad areas, and SEA LIFE Aquarium are all fine for a baby to tag along to while an older sibling rides.

What are the best free things to do with a toddler in San Diego North County?

Batiquitos Lagoon, San Elijo Lagoon, Jack's Pond Park, Kit Carson Park, and weekly library story times are all free.

Are North County attractions stroller-friendly?

Very. Most major attractions like LEGOLAND and the Safari Park are stroller-friendly with wide, paved, flat paths. The main exceptions are the beach and SoCal Mini Pigs, where a carrier for babies works better than a stroller.

How many days do you need to see North County San Diego with kids?

Two to three days covers the highlights: one day for LEGOLAND, one for the Safari Park, and a half day for beaches or lagoon trails, without over-scheduling around nap times.

What's the best time of year to visit North County San Diego with a baby?

Spring (roughly March through May) lines up with Flower Fields bloom season and mild coastal weather. Fall (October through November) is a close second, with fewer crowds and cooler inland temperatures at the Safari Park.

Do you need a car to get around North County San Diego with kids?

Yes. Attractions are spread across several cities, and public transit isn't practical with a stroller or car seat in tow, so plan on driving between stops.
